Boundary Breath

For when you've been giving a lot to others and feel the low-grade resentment starting to creep in

August has a way of concentrating the year's accumulated over-giving. By now you've said yes to enough things that some of them have started to feel resentful rather than generous. This practice is for finding what's underneath that — the specific need that hasn't been named — before the season turns and you carry it into fall.

Before you begin: You don't need to know yet what you need — that's what step 3 is for. You just need to notice that something has been feeling resentful or depleted. That signal is enough to start. The specificity comes from the practice, not before it.

The practice

Boundary Run

Resentment is almost always a sign that something you need has been going unnamed. This practice helps you find it before it comes out sideways.

  1. Ask what's missing

Sit quietly and ask: what have I been giving that I haven't been getting back? Let the answer arrive without judgment.

  2. Breath of honesty

Full inhale. On the exhale, let yourself be completely honest — even if the honesty is inconvenient or makes you seem less generous. What is actually true?

  3. Locate the need

Beneath the resentment is usually a need: to be seen, to have time, to be asked. Name it. Breathe into it.

  4. Receive breath

Inhale and imagine receiving what you need — not from anyone specific, just the feeling of it. Let your body experience being filled rather than drained.

  5. Ask for what you need

Before this practice ends, commit to naming the need to one person. Not as a complaint. As a request.

When else to use this: Before having the conversation where you name what you need. Before saying no to something you've been saying yes to out of habit. Before any moment where you can feel the resentment building and you know the honest thing is to name what's missing rather than wait for it to come out another way.

The clearest act of love for others is knowing what you need first.

Pay attention to what you feel.

Come back to what matters.

Bloom in your own season.

A deep breath in a beautiful life.

Talk soon.
