For when you're standing at the start line and the anxiety is louder than the confidence

7-10 min ✦ Pre-run ✦ Running
October is peak fall race season — the months most runners have been building toward since spring. This practice is for the morning of. Not to calm you down. To convert what you're already feeling into something you can use.
Before you begin: Step away from the crowd if you can — even 30 feet makes a difference. You don't need silence, just a little space from the collective nervous energy of the start line. Five minutes is enough. You can do this in your car on the way to the race if the start area is too loud.

The practice
Pre-Race Nervous System Settle
Race nerves are not a sign something is wrong. They're your body preparing. This practice doesn't eliminate them — it converts them. From anxious arousal to excited readiness. Same energy, completely different story.
-
Find a quiet edge
Step away from the crowd for 5 minutes if you can.
-
Label the feeling accurately
Say: 'This is excitement. My body is ready.' Research shows this reframe measurably improves performance.
-
Extended exhale breathing
Inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 8. Do 6 rounds.
-
Body scan activation
Roll your ankles. Shake out your wrists. Drop and roll your shoulders. Let your body feel alive and loose.
-
Race breath
One final breath: inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4. Signal sent. You're ready.
When else to use this: Before any high-stakes performance moment — not just races. A job interview, a presentation, a difficult conversation, an audition, a first date. Anywhere the nerves are louder than the confidence and you need to convert that energy rather than suppress it.
"Nerves mean you care. Caring means this matters. Let it matter."
Pay attention to what you feel.
Come back to what matters.
Bloom in your own season.
A deep breath in a beautiful life.
Talk soon.
