Sitting with Fear
For when fear has been making decisions for you and you're ready to look at it directly

October has always been the month of things becoming visible. The trees strip back, the light goes thin and honest, and whatever has been obscured by the fullness of summer starts to emerge. It's a good month to look at fear directly — the season is already doing that work with everything else.
Before you begin: Stand up before you start — don't do this one seated. Move for 30 seconds first: walk to the window, shake out your hands, roll your shoulders. The body needs to wake up before the breath can activate it. Movement first, breath second.

Sitting with Fear
We don't overcome fear by avoiding it. We overcome it by getting familiar with it — by breathing into it until it becomes something we understand rather than something that controls us.
-
Name the fear specifically
Not 'I'm afraid of failure.' What specifically? 'I'm afraid that if I try and it doesn't work, I'll have proof I'm not enough.' That specific. Breathe into that.
-
Feel it in your body
Where does this fear live? Your chest? Your throat? Your gut? Put your hand there. Breathe directly into that place.
-
Fear breath
With each inhale, let the fear expand — not grow, but have more room. You are making yourself bigger than it. Exhale slowly.
-
Ask what the fear is protecting
Fear almost always guards something precious — a dream, a belief about yourself, a relationship. Ask: what is this fear trying to protect? Breathe the answer in gently.
-
Thank it and choose anyway
On a final exhale: 'Thank you. I see what you're protecting. I'm going forward anyway.' You are not fearless. You are brave. Different thing.
When else to use this: Before any decision you've been avoiding because the fear of the wrong choice is louder than the clarity about the right one. Before a hard conversation that fear has been postponing. Before starting something you've wanted to start for a long time and haven't. Any time you realize fear has been the one making the decisions rather than you.
"Busy and productive are not the same thing. Choose the one that moves you forward."
Pay attention to what you feel.
Come back to what matters.
Bloom in your own season.
A deep breath in a beautiful life.

Same energy, completely different story. Five minutes before the start line changes everything about what you bring to the gun.
