Making Room for What's Here

For when grief or big feelings arrive unexpectedly and you don't know what to do with them

Sometimes emotion doesn't knock — it just arrives. This practice isn't about fixing or processing. It's about creating a container big enough to feel what's real without being swept away by it.

Before you begin: Give yourself at least 15 minutes of uninterrupted time. This isn't a practice to squeeze between things. If big feelings have arrived, they deserve more than a gap in your schedule. Find somewhere private where you don't have to manage how you look or sound.

The practice

Making Room for What's Here

Expanding the breath physically widens the chest cavity, which creates a felt sense of more space — both for air and for emotion. We're using the body's natural capacity for expansion as a metaphor it can actually feel.

  1. Acknowledge without fighting

Place one hand on your heart and say: 'Something big is here. I don't have to solve it right now.'

  2. Breath of acknowledgment

Inhale slowly for 5 counts. On the exhale, make a soft 'haaah' sound — mouth open, completely unforced. Let it sound however it sounds.

  3. Expand on the inhale

With each inhale, imagine your chest physically widening — making more space inside. Not pushing the feeling away, but giving it room to exist.

  4. Soften on the exhale

With each exhale, soften around the feeling. Not releasing it. Just stopping the grip. Repeat for 8–10 rounds.

  5. Rest in presence

Return to natural breath. Let yourself just be with whatever is here. You don't have to understand it today.

When else to use this: Loss, grief, unexpected news, or any moment when you need to feel something without being swept away by it.

"You don't have to be fine. You just have to be here."

Pay attention to what you feel.

Come back to what matters.

Bloom in your own season.

A deep breath in a beautiful life.

Talk soon.
