Good Enough Breath

For when perfectionism is stopping you from making, sharing, or finishing something

July is peak creative season and peak perfectionism season — both happening at once. The long days create space to make things, and that space also creates space to second-guess them. This practice is for the moment when the second-guessing has gone on long enough and something needs to go out into the world.

Before you begin: Name the specific thing you're withholding. Not 'my creative work' — but the actual thing: the blog post draft, the Instagram caption, the email you've rewritten four times, the project you've been calling unfinished for three months. Having it specific in your mind before you start makes step 1 real rather than abstract.

The practice

Good Enough Breath

Perfectionism is not high standards. It's fear wearing a very convincing costume. This practice is about releasing the grip of 'not good enough' so something can actually exist in the world.

  1. Name the thing you're withholding

The project, the post, the idea, the conversation. Name it. Say: 'I'm scared to put this out because...' Finish the sentence.

  2. Exhale the fear

Full inhale. On the exhale — let the fear sound. A sigh, a groan, whatever comes. Your body knows what to do with it if you let it.

  3. Breath of permission

Inhale for 4. On the exhale, say (aloud or silently): 'I give myself permission to be imperfect at this.' Repeat 4 times. Mean it a little more each time.

  4. Shrink the standard

Ask: what would 'good enough for right now' look like? Not forever. Not for your biggest critic. Just for right now. Breathe into that bar.

  5. Ship something

After this practice, do one small act of creative release — post it, send it, share it with one person. The practice only works if something actually leaves your hands.

When else to use this: Before publishing anything — a blog post, an Instagram caption, a pitch, an email to someone important. Before sharing a creative project with someone whose opinion matters to you. Any time 'not ready yet' has been the answer for longer than is actually true. The practice works best when something specific is waiting to leave your hands.

Done and imperfect is infinitely more powerful than perfect and invisible.

Pay attention to what you feel.

Come back to what matters.

Bloom in your own season.

A deep breath in a beautiful life.

Talk soon.
