Pre-Race Nervous System Settle— Bloom Within
Race nerves are not a sign something is wrong. They're your body preparing. This practice doesn't eliminate them — it converts them. From anxious arousal to excited readiness. Same energy, completely different story. Five minutes before the start line changes everything about what you bring to the gun.
Nourish: September Vegetable of the Month — Butternut Squash
Roasting the squash first changes everything. The sugars concentrate, the edges caramelize, and what could be a flat puree becomes something deeply savory and complex. This soup takes about an hour, most of which is hands-off oven time. Make it Sunday. Eat it all week. It's better by day two anyway.
Bridge Guide — | Read Together October 2026
Fear doesn’t go away. That’s where this month’s guide starts — not with fearlessness, but with the quieter practice of feeling afraid and going anyway. Five books, five ages, one question running through all of them: what would you do if you went anyway?
Nourish: October Vegetable of the Month — Pumpkin
About ten years ago, Costco was selling a fresh ravioli with a sauce suggestion printed right on the package: brown butter and sage. I made it once and immediately started telling everyone about it. My mom especially. And then, as these things go, it disappeared from the shelves. She still brings it up occasionally, in that particular tone reserved for things the world discontinued without asking permission. This pasta is my answer — the same brown butter, the same crispy sage, but pumpkin standing in as the sauce itself. Nobody expects pumpkin to be dinner in October. Thirty minutes, one pot, and it tastes like the season decided to stay for supper.
Sitting with Fear — Bloom Within
We don't overcome fear by avoiding it. We overcome it by getting familiar enough with it that it stops running the show. This 15-minute practice asks you to look at it directly — to breathe into what you're afraid of until it becomes something you understand rather than something that controls you. You are not fearless. You are brave. Different thing.
Nourish: September Fruit of the Month — Apples
The first cool evening of September always arrives like a reminder. The kitchen gets warmer, the oven gets turned on, and suddenly everything you want to eat involves something caramelized and something creamy. If you grew up with apple trees — or know someone who has them — you also know that September arrives with an abundance problem. Dozens of apples, all at once, only so much freezer space. This flatbread is the answer: sweet apples cooked down with cinnamon until golden, fresh figs and goat cheese on a blistered crust, finished with honey and black pepper. On the table in under thirty minutes and it tastes like the season actually started.
I'm Scared We'll Lose Touch
Three weeks ago I started a run club. One Saturday nobody came. The surface version of that morning was fine — we went to the coffee shop, it was lovely. The underneath version is what I've been sitting with since. On loneliness, the village shrinking, and what it looks like to finally stop moving past the fear long enough to be with it for five breaths.
Get Some Exercise Every Day.
I spent years being very good at exercise and having almost no idea why I was doing it outside of competition. A Division I athlete who lost her relationship with movement the moment the sport ended — and had to find her way back to it entirely on her own terms.
On Being Brave Anyway— Read Together October 2026
October's Read Together is built around one honest truth: fear doesn't go away, but you can get better at going anyway. Five books — one picture book, one for teens, two adult reads, and one for the fiction reader — woven around what it means to face your fears and build courage from the inside out.
Afternoon Activation — Bloom Within
The 3pm energy dip is physiological — a natural circadian trough that no amount of willpower reliably fixes. This 7-minute practice uses energizing breath ratio and kapalabhati pumps to create a clean, focused second wind. No caffeine, no crash, no spike. Just your nervous system's built-in alertness system, activated on purpose.
The 5-Minute Desk Break — Root & Rise
Somewhere around the second hour of sitting, the neck tightens, the shoulders creep up, the upper back starts to ache. This is a five-minute reset for that body — four moves, done in order, at your desk. Neck Rolls, Shoulder Rolls, Seated Twist, Wrist & Finger Stretches. Bookmark it and come back whenever you need it.
What All That Sitting Has Been Doing to Your Legs — Root & Rise September 2026
The hamstrings shorten from sitting. They lengthen from attention. This four-pose standing flow was built for the back-to-school body — the one that's been at a desk, in a car, in the carpool line — and needs fifteen minutes and a few feet of space to feel like itself again.
On What Beginning Again Actually Looks Like— September Wrap-Up & A Look Ahead | Read Together 2026
September is almost behind us — and it turns out this month wasn't really about managing time at all. A reflection on The Wonderful Things You Will Be, Drop the Ball, Atomic Habits, and The Midnight Library, plus what beginning again actually looks like when you're living it. And a first look at what's coming in October.
On Cutting the Sandwich Into Squares— Mid-Month Check-In | Read Together September 2026
We're halfway through September and I've been thinking about a sandwich. A reflection on Drop the Ball, my daughter's first day of nursery school, and what it actually means to drop the ball on purpose — plus this month's discussion prompts for every reader in your life.
Processing a Hard Run — Bloom Within
A bad run isn't data about who you are. It's just one run. But sometimes it doesn't feel that way — especially for anyone who spent years tying identity to performance. This practice is for coming home after the run that stings, letting the nervous system settle, and separating what happened from what it means.
The Harvest Focus Breath — Bloom Within
September sharpens everything — the light, the pace, the sense that time is suddenly moving again. This 8-minute coherence breathing practice is for using that sharpening intentionally rather than being consumed by it. Busy and productive are not the same thing. This practice helps you know the difference.
Opening Yourself to Others — Root & Rise August 2026
Four weeks of movement and reflection — built around what it means to make yourself available, extend toward others, embrace what you find, and return to yourself. August's Root & Rise opens the chest, arms, and upper back — and closes with the most important relationship of all.
Get Dressed First Thing
There was a stretch of weeks where I wore the same two pairs of leggings and a baggy sweatshirt on rotation and considered it a victory if I made it into a clean shirt before noon. Nobody tells you about the slow, quiet way you can start to lose the thread of yourself — one skipped shower and one inside-out shirt at a time.
On Beginning Again— Read Together September 2026
September is the month that makes intentionality feel urgent. Five books — one picture book, one for teens, two adult reads, and one for the fiction reader — built around what it means to use your time on purpose, set your family up for the year ahead, and build the routines that actually stick.
Making Room for What's Here— Bloom Within
Sometimes emotion doesn't knock — it just arrives. This practice isn't about fixing or processing what's here. It's about creating a container big enough to feel what's real without being swept away by it. You don't have to understand it today. You just have to make room.
